Portuguese Water Dog · Cão de Água Português
A small Portuguese Water Dog kennel
in the heart of Bohemia.
Cão Salgado is a small, family-run Portuguese Water Dog kennel based in Slaný, Czech Republic — about 30 minutes north-west of Prague. We are registered with the Czech-Moravian Cynological Union (ČMKU) and through it with the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), kennel registration #613/21, founded in 2021.
Our work focuses on the health, temperament and working heritage of the breed. Every breeding decision starts from a complete genetic and orthopaedic profile of both parents — not from looks, not from titles, not from demand for puppies.
The kennel currently has three dogs: two breeding females and one retired male who started us with the breed back in 2015. Our current litter (Vrh A, born ) — 7 puppies (4 males, 3 females). Reservations are open. Full litter detail (CZ).

Health-tested breeding
Every breeding parent in Cão Salgado has a complete documented health profile:
- Hip + elbow dysplasia (DKK / DLK) — radiographic evaluation by an FCI-recognised specialist
- Eye examination (CEA, ECVO ophthalmologist), repeated annually
- DNA panel: PRA-prcd, EOPRA, GM1, CDPA / CDDY / IVDD, RSPO2 — all tested via an accredited laboratory (Genomia)
- Bite + dentition — scissor bite, full dental formula
Every result — including any carrier status — is published on the dog’s profile page so prospective owners can review it openly. Hidden test results are a red flag in this breed; we don’t operate that way.
We follow the Czech Portuguese Water Dog Club breeding regulations and the ČMKU breeding standards. Our female breeding pairs are limited to a maximum of one litter per year per dam, with a recovery period mandated by the breed club.
About the breeder
Dana Srbováhas been working with Portuguese Water Dogs since 2015, when she brought home her first dog of the breed. The kennel itself was founded in 2021 and is the first ČMKU/FCI-registered Portuguese Water Dog kennel in Slaný. Dana is a member of the KCHLS retriever & spaniel club and works actively with her dogs in hoopers (since 2015), coursing, water sports and the Czech, regional and international show circuit.
“A puppy is a fourteen-year decision. We choose every detail with that in mind — health, temperament, and the new owner.”
Frequently asked questions
- Do you ship Portuguese Water Dog puppies abroad from the Czech Republic?
- Yes. We are happy to work with serious owners abroad. EU buyers can travel directly with the puppy under the EU pet passport from 15 weeks of age (rabies-vaccinated and microchipped). Buyers outside the EU need to meet their country’s import rules for live animals. We do not arrange commercial shipping; we prefer the new owner to collect the puppy in person so we can meet them.
- Are Portuguese Water Dogs hypoallergenic?
- Portuguese Water Dogs have a single, low-shedding curly or wavy coat that is often well tolerated by people with mild dog allergies. No dog is fully hypoallergenic — reactions are individual. We always recommend prospective owners with allergies meet our adult dogs in person before committing to a puppy.
- How much does a Cão Salgado puppy cost?
- We do not publish a fixed price online. Pricing depends on the litter, the puppy’s placement (companion vs. show vs. breeding) and the country of destination. We discuss pricing transparently in writing once we know the home it would go to. Reservations are taken only after a phone or video call.
- Are puppies currently available?
- Yes — our litter (Vrh A) was born on 19 May 2026. There are 7 puppies (4 males and 3 females). Reservations are open and the waiting list is active — some spots may still be available depending on placement. Puppies go to their new homes at 8–10 weeks of age. Each female is bred at most once per year per breed club regulations. See https://caosalgado.cz/vrhy/vrh-a for the full litter detail.
- What health tests do you do on your breeding dogs?
- Every breeding parent has hip and elbow dysplasia X-rays evaluated by an FCI-recognised specialist (DKK / DLK), an annual eye examination by an ECVO ophthalmologist, and a full DNA panel through Genomia covering PRA-prcd, EOPRA, GM1, CDPA / CDDY / IVDD and RSPO2. Bite and dentition are also documented. Every result, including any carrier status, is published openly on the dog’s profile page.
- Can I visit the kennel?
- Yes — visits are by appointment only and are part of how we get to know prospective owners. Please email us in English (info@caosalgado.cz) or call +420 724 564 476 to arrange a time. We are based in Slaný, about 30 minutes north-west of Prague.
